The Peter Principles: What Ralph Lauren's Executives Learned From Peter Strom
2021
MINDY GROSSMAN, president and chief executive officer of WW, and former president and CEO, Polo Jeans Co. * Set high expectations and balance toughness and resolve with kindness, warmth and humor. * Have ultimate respect for and do not compromise as it relates to brand. * Integrity and character are everything. * Be curious, ask questions and listen. * Build and nurture the best team possible. CHERYL STERLING, fashion industry consultant, former president and chief operating officer of Ralph Lauren Womenswear * Know how and when to compromise. * You dont grow [a company] without great people. * The receptionist position, the first person you see who represents the company, is as important as the CEO. * Know everyone by name. CHARLES FAGAN, chief of staff to Ralph Lauren, executive vice president of Ralph Lauren Hospitality * Although I was at the beginning of my career when Peter was leading the company with Ralph, from my vantage point he was the definition of a servant leader, before the term was widely used in business. * Peter was obviously sharp, competitive, discerning and capable of all the mechanics it takes to build a company. KAREN ROSENBACH, managing partner, KLR Global Search, previously senior vice president, human resources and administration at Ralph Lauren * Working for Peter and watching him, I learned humility, generosity, kindness and humor.

Athena Goes to the Prater: Parodying Ancients and Moderns at the Vienna Secession
2003
This essay proposes that art criticism in Vienna was marked by humour and joking, arising from a Viennese literary tradition of polemics and feuilleton writing. It traces the reception of joking by the first narrators of the Vienna Secession, Hermann Bahr and Ludwig Hevesi, and suggests that joking provided an ideal space of opposition in the Habsburg Monarchy, which was otherwise remarkably accepting of the latest art. The jokes that the Secession's chroniclers publicised emphasised the gap between an outraged audience and Secessionist artist. The jokes they omitted made light of indifferent spectators, or their overt enthusiasm for the fashionable aspects of the Secession. The article pays special attention to an elaborate, two-day festival that was staged at the Prater in 1899, an overlooked parody of the Secession, and argues that the first chroniclers of the Secession suppressed it because it demonstrated how popular and easily co-opted the Secession was. Taking jokes seriously helps disentangle some of the myths of the Secession.

Silly clothes for strange times
2020
Other examples of Ino’s work include a “plamodel” knitwear set of beanie, gloves, scarf and jumper that come tied to one another in a neat web mimicking a children’s plastic model-building kit (scissors not included). The brand, founded in 2012, shows during Paris Fashion Week; in 2018 Ino won the prestigious LVMH Prize for Young Designers; and his stockists include the agenda-setting high-fashion emporium Dover Street Market (which has outposts in cities including London, Tokyo and LA) and Ssense, the Canadian luxury ecommerce giant. The most eccentric pieces, and the way designers promote them through irreverent campaigns and shows (Doublet putting monkey masks on models, or hosting its runway show in a fast-food restaurant), have the effect of creating a humorous halo around a brand.
